Cooped up in Karachi's cage
For all those who couldn't leave their homes today because of Zulfi Mirza and the MQM's shenanigans, here's some cool Karachi pics from one of my favourite photographers - Jamal Ashiqain.

My Kolachi
It is a warm Thursday night in my beloved, blood-sucking city of Karachi. The weekend hasn’t begun but the action certainly has. It is 11 pm and TV reports are rolling in of 30 killings that occurred in the city today and a total of 67 in the past three days. The Chief Minister called in an urgent meeting with police officials, ordering them to shoot the terrorists on sight and the MQM has declared tomorrow ‘A Day of Mourning’. It is a violent day in Karachi, even by its own bloody standards.
This is my Thursday night and that of around 18 million other residents of this city. Some days are worse then others but its people keep afloat. Its important to remember though that this is not all there is to Karachi. As the city erupts with chaos and uncertainty day in day out, as bullets fly over our heads and riots stop us from wandering too far, a beautiful world co-exists. A Karachi rich in culture, art, beauty, fashion and food brims within, sometimes stifled but mostly inspired by the crazy that dominates our world.
I grew up in this city of trouble, became a shade darker under its sun every summer and fell ill from the lamest chill in the winters. This is where I made my friends, first fell in love and lost old members of my family. Its damp sea breeze has rusted every part of my body, heart and brain, and you can’t remove it from my thoughts without chipping away an essential part of me.
A journalist by day and a culture fiend by night, I aim to dig out everything that shimmers in these dark times that Karachi faces and share them with you.Through this blog I not only want to discover everything exciting Karachi has to offer but also try and find my voice as a writer. But mostly, in these depressing times I want to find things that will keep me happy. I hope they will make you happy too.
